Career Development
After high school I started working as a radio jockey at a local radio station in Paramaribo. At same time I was studying history at IOL. I started working because my mother told me that she didn’t have enough money to have me study any further. My younger brother and sister also needed education so I decided to work. Living by my own in Paramaribo, working till 3 pm and after that joining the course at 5 pm was a hell. Despite of all these obstacles I was able to finish the history course in 2003. A course of 2 years I had finished in 4 years.
In 2003, I stopped working as an RJ and started working as a history teacher at MULO Latour. As a teacher without any experience it was very hard to stand in front of the class and teaching adolescents. The first and second year I struggled a lot, but despite of all the struggle, I was able to find my way in the educational system of Suriname. I observed a lot during this period, and with the help of colleagues and the belief and willingness on my part, I want to be a good teacher one day. This is my 13th year that I have been teaching history, a very boring subject for students but till now I’m able to motivate my students and convince them that without history, without knowing your history, you can’t establish development.
I have been working at the R.D. Simonsschool as a teacher since October 2006. In 2010 the school asked me to join the management team of the school. Now I’m the second assistant principal of the school. What I want now is to become a coach and teaching other teachers to work with innovated tools for education.
